St Antoni de Calonge



This village of 8.200 inhabitants is made up of: Calonge on one hand, and the coastal centre of St. Antoni on the other one, which must be seen for the visitor to could know completely this village and discover with it the main treasures of Empordà.
We begin the day going to the coast, St. Antoni, starting the visit with the beach of Es Monestri, which connects the beaches of Palamós with those of St. Antoni.
If we continue, we will observe the beach of Sant Antoni, with its characteristic breakwaters.
From here, crossing the bridge on the stream of Calonge, we will arrive to the well-known beach of Torre Valentina, where we find its Medieval Tower (that was built as defense system against pirates, close to another 2 towers of guard: Torre del Baró and Torre de Mal Us).
If we go towards Platja d'Aro, we arrive to “Camino de Ronda”, one of the best places to walk of the Costa Brava, going around different coves, like: La Cala del Racó dels Homes, La Cala Rocosa, Cala Morta ... that should be discovered, one by one, to could enjoy their beauty at all.
We will dedicate a little our time to walk peacefully along his Promenade, the longest of the Costa Brava, where it ‘s possible to find everything that we need to complete a perfect day of holidays, with great variety of restaurants, bars and shops. We will go to the village of Calonge, with a seductive architectural patrimony, concentrated on the old centre, worth seeing.
We begin the tour in the "Plaza de la Concordia", where we find an area of services as the Town hall, Police officer,...
Leaving this square, we continue the way by the Rutlla Street, commercial area. Around there, we will see San Martí's Church (of Baroque style, of the 18th Century), important place of the village.
Most of the activity is in Plaza Mayor, where we'll find one of the biggest fortress of Baix Empordà, the Medieval Castle (founded by the Counts of Girona), from which the village was by. In this castle we will live again the medieval age. Currently it is the centre of the cultural activity, where people makes festivals of music , the medieval market of Holy Week, living nativity scenes in Christmas...
Apart from these historical monuments, we can visit the important Dolmens and Menhirs of the village, as the Dolmen of Puigsesforques, or the Pre-Roman Settlement of Castell Barri, one of the most important site of the age.
Therefore, in a complete route for the village, we will always enjoy his forests, dolmens, beaches and the historical monuments, with time to relax with an ice cream or a soda in the Promenade, looking at the sea, or, just making a few buys in the shops we'll find, and having a wished and quite holiday's day.
