Roses is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, located on the Costa Brava, in Catalonia, Spain. It is an essentially Mediterranean town with a notable tourist and seafaring tradition, and it is situated in a unique natural setting, at the north of the Costa Brava, less than 30 kilometres from the frontier with France, 65 kilometres from Girona and 160 kilometres from Barcelona.
Its origins go back to the 8th century BC with the arrival of the Rhodians and the foundation of the Greek city of Rhodes. These historical events have become the marks of identity of a modern, culturally active and generous town born of a peaceful co-existence with other peoples and civilisations in which we find a source of pride and satisfaction. Over the last decades important excavations have been carried out inside the walls of the Ciutadella. This concerns not only the Greek and Roman remains, but also part of the medieval city and its walls. In the 1990s extensive restoration work was carried out on the walls of the Ciutadella, and in 2004 a museum was opened inside it. A somewhat controversial restoration of the Castell de Trinitat was formally completed in 2010.
We invite you to find your way around a town full of delights and new sensations awaiting your discovery, as did the earliest settlers over 3,000 years ago; a place in which the enjoyment of nature, culture and traditions is a privilege available to all.
Roses was the home of El Bulli, one of the world's best and most famous restaurants, from 1961 until its closure in July 2011. El Bulli had held three Michelin stars since 1997 and was rated the world's best restaurant for four years running since 2005 by Restaurant Magazine.
If we manage to have Roses seduce you with its beautiful sunsets, the amiable and hospitable nature of its people, its historical legacy, the range of tourist, sports and gastronomic facilities, the professionalism of the services on offer and the infinite leisure and relaxation potential, then we will have achieved our objective.
